The big story here is Shadow ES, Shimano's updated chain-stabilizing system that ditches the old adjustable clutch in favor of a dual-spring design that cranks up chain tension by around 70% over the previous generation. The result is a derailleur that keeps the chain planted and quiet over rough ground, while its low-profile wedge-shaped body slides past rocks and roots instead of catching on them. If a hard hit does land, an internal spring absorbs the impact and snaps the derailleur right back into position.
